Sharing the Light of Jesus and the light from Hawaiian Electric
My biggest concern as the Executive Director is for students whose home lives are not ideal. School is a good outlet for students with abusive homes or no homes at all. YFC clubs provide a place where they can hang out with friends, learn about Jesus and escape from things they cannot control. Chaz, who has been a part of Farrington YFC Club since he was a freshman, trusts us and has shared his story.
Chaz’s home life is full of struggles. Two weeks ago when shut down started, Chaz reached out and informed our staff that his family had no electricity for 4 months. When he was in school the lack of electricity didn’t affect him, but being at home all day due to the present circumstances caused it to take a toll. Our staff took action by calling his parents, asking for information on how we could help. Initially, the parents were angry and upset that Chaz had told us. However, the yelling soon turned into tears as the parents realized they needed help. Our YFC staff members Doug and Stevie Koehn went to HEI and paid the bill. They were able to help their family get the electricity turned back on. No more living in darkness— they could now use the refrigerator again. Had it not been for Chaz’s trust, this could not have happened. It really got me thinking about how many other students may be going through the same thing. The stay-at-home restrictions are tough for all, but even more so for those with abusive homes or financial struggles.
